Stump Grinding in Meadow Vista, CA

Meadow Vista driveways pitch, and a layer of pine needles hides exactly how much.

We walk a drive before pulling a loaded trailer down it. If the grade or the surface won't hold the machine on the way back up, that's better to find out on foot. When it won't work we say so, because nobody wants a grinder parked halfway down a hill until the ground dries out.

Dead pine, cedar, and oak in the draw

The common call up here is a ponderosa that died from drought stress or beetles, came down or got taken down, and left a stump at the edge of the clearing. Cedar close to the house is next, usually removed for clearance or fire safety. Oak turns up down in the draws.

Pine grinds clean and moves fast. Cedar is stringy. Oak is slow. All of them come out 6 to 12 inches below grade, so the ground is clear rather than stubbed off at the surface.

Wells in the needles, and what comes after a fuels cut

Most homes out here are on a well, and the lid tends to disappear under needle duff until someone steps on it. Point it out. Same with the pressure tank line and anything running to an outbuilding.

If you've had defensible-space work done, there's a good chance the crew dropped and hauled the trees and left the stumps standing at cutting height. Those are still fuel and still a hazard in the dark. We grind them below grade. What we don't do is take on a whole ridge of brush unless clearing is the job you're hiring for, and that's a separate conversation.
