Applegate is a handful of roads off I-80 between Auburn and Colfax, and we come up for it regularly.
The lots are a mix of everything the foothills do: a leftover fruit tree from when this was orchard ground, a ponderosa that died a couple of summers back, a live oak next to an old tank house. Usually you're looking at one or two stumps rather than a yard full, which makes it a clean job to schedule.

Wells, propane, and shared drives
Most places up here are on a well, and a fair number share a drive with a neighbor. Both matter before we start.
The stump is frequently within a few feet of a well lid, a pressure tank, or a propane tank sitting on its own pad. Walk us to all of them. We grind right up next to that kind of thing routinely. It's only a problem when nobody mentions it and we're working off assumptions.
On a shared drive, let us know if there's a neighbor who'll need to get past. It's easier to plan around than to sort out mid-job with a trailer in the way.
Getting the ground actually clear
We take stumps 6 to 12 inches below grade, which up here usually has a specific purpose behind it. You want to grade the area, park a trailer, run a mower across it, or clear ground around the house before fire season.
Stubbing it at the surface doesn't accomplish any of that. Going under does, and the chips can stay in the hole or get piled wherever you tell us.
