David's Stump Grinding is based in Auburn, California and works across Placer County. We run a Vermeer stump grinder and take stumps 6 to 12 inches below grade. At that depth you can backfill the hole with soil and seed it, lay sod over it, or plant something new nearby.
What we grind
Most of our work is oak and pine, because that's what grows here. Pine grinds quickly. Valley oak and live oak are dense, take longer, and produce a much larger pile of chips. Old fruit wood on Newcastle and Penryn properties is usually a cluster of small stems instead of one wide stump, and it goes to the same depth.
The chips are yours if you want them. Plenty of customers spread them on paths and planting beds. If you'd rather not deal with them, we rake them into a pile wherever you point, or we can talk about hauling them off.
Our services
Stumps are the main thing we do, but we handle the rest of the yard when it needs it.
What we don't take: timber-sized trees, crane work, or anything that has to come off a roof. Those jobs need a different contractor with a different insurance policy, and we'll tell you that on the phone.
Gate and access
Older Auburn lots and newer tract yards usually have one narrow way into the backyard. Our grinder fits through a 36-inch gate.
Measure the narrowest point of the opening, then look at what's behind it. A step down, a hard turn, or an AC pad in the path matters as much as the gate width. A photo of the gate answers this faster than a description over the phone.

Stump grinding questions
Common questions about grinding depth, wood chips, gate access, wells and irrigation, and what stump grinding costs.
How far below grade do you grind?
Six to twelve inches. That's deep enough to backfill with soil and grow grass over the spot, or to plant nearby without hitting solid wood. It isn't a full root excavation. The wider root system stays in the ground and breaks down over the following years.
What happens to the wood chips?
That's your choice. We can leave them in the hole, rake them into a pile where you want it, or haul them off if the volume is manageable. A large oak produces a large volume of chips, so if you want them gone entirely, tell us when you call rather than when we arrive.
Will the stump grow back?
Not the stump itself. Some species, live oak in particular, can push suckers up from roots left in the ground for a season or two. Mowing them off handles it in most yards. Grinding removes the stump, not every root in the soil.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
Not directly in the hole, and not right away. Ground-up wood ties up nitrogen while it breaks down, and there's still root material below. If planting is the goal, tell us and we'll pile the chips off to the side so you can backfill with clean soil. Plan on planting a few feet off center from the old trunk.
